Assets You Can Trade on Kraken

Fees explained

Kraken prices the same trade three different ways, and the gap between the routes is wide. The rates below are the published rates as of September 2026 for an account with no 30-day volume on the spot order book (source: Kraken fee schedule). A Kraken+ subscription removes trading fees on up to $10,000 of monthly volume on major pairs.

Funding is where Kraken is cheap. ACH, FedWire, SEPA, Faster Payments, iDEAL and Canadian e-Transfer deposits are all free, while a debit card deposit costs 0.25 in the deposit currency plus 3.75% (source: Kraken cash deposit fees page). Funding by bank transfer and buying on the order book therefore costs a fraction of the same purchase made by card through the instant-buy screen.

A cost estimate for a $500 purchase on Kraken and Coinbase Exchange appears here once the published fee schedules are verified.

History and ownership

Kraken is one of the oldest exchanges still operating under its original name. As of September 2026 the company states it launched more than 14 years ago and is used by more than 13 million people (source: Kraken about page). It remains privately held, which means no audited public financials and no quarterly disclosure of the kind a listed company files.

The operating entities are named in the public record rather than on the marketing site. A 2023 Securities and Exchange Commission action identified Payward Ventures, Inc. and Payward Trading Ltd. as the companies commonly known as Kraken (source: SEC press release 2023-25, 9 February 2023). Payward is the corporate name to search when you want to check a license register or a court docket, and it is the name that appears in filings rather than the brand you see in the app.

Products and markets

As of September 2026, Kraken's public asset-pairs endpoint lists 1,384 online spot markets across 639 base assets and 22 quote currencies (source: Kraken public API). That is a broader fiat quote list than most US-facing venues carry and a broader asset list than Coinbase, though well short of the offshore exchanges.

Alongside spot, Kraken publishes separate products for futures, margin trading, staking, custody and institutional access, plus a desktop client and a public API (source: Kraken product pages). The relevant split for a buyer is narrower: the instant-buy screen and the Kraken Pro order book draw on the same markets and charge very different amounts, and choosing between them is worth more than choosing between exchanges.

Security record and custody

Kraken publishes more third-party attestation than most. The company states that its cybersecurity and information security management systems have earned ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification and that it has completed a SOC 2 Type 1 examination, that it works periodically with an external auditor on proof of reserves covering exchange and on-chain staking balances, and that customer funds sit in a mix of cold wallet and hot wallet infrastructure held in secure cages under 24-hour surveillance (source: Kraken security page). An account holder can log in and verify that Kraken held the covered tokens in their account at the time of the audit.

The enforcement record is one settled matter. On 9 February 2023 the SEC charged Payward Ventures, Inc. and Payward Trading Ltd. with failing to register the offer and sale of a crypto asset staking program that advertised annual returns of as much as 21% (source: SEC press release 2023-25). To settle, the two entities agreed to stop offering the staking program to US customers and to pay $30 million in disgorgement, prejudgment interest and civil penalties, consenting to a final judgment without admitting or denying the allegations.

Deposits and withdrawals

This is the section that decides whether Kraken is cheap for you. The published cash deposit charges as of September 2026 are set out below (source: Kraken cash deposit fees page). The gap between the free bank rails and the card route is larger than the gap between any two exchanges' trading rates.

The practical order of operations is to move cash in by a free bank rail, wait for it to settle, and then place a limit order on the Pro order book. Doing it the other way, by tapping a card through the instant-buy screen, stacks 3.75% on top of 1%. Rails vary by country, so confirm which ones apply where you live before planning around them, using United States or the relevant country page, and Buy Bitcoin in United States for the asset-level view.

Support and usability

Kraken states that it provides 24-hour support every day through a globally distributed team reachable online and in the app (source: Kraken about page). That is a genuine point of difference from venues where support is a ticket form and a wait.

Usability is otherwise a two-track story, and the tracks cost different amounts. The simple screen is fast, forgiving and expensive. Kraken Pro asks you to understand a maker taker fee table and to place your own order, and pays you back at less than half the rate. Anyone planning to buy more than occasionally should learn the second screen. kyc applies to every account, and the tier you land in on the fee schedule depends on 30-day volume, so a small account sits at the top of the table.

Kraken suits someone who funds by bank transfer, buys on the order book, and wants published security attestations rather than assurances. The free deposit rails and the 0.40% maker rate together make it one of the cheaper mainstream routes into crypto, and the support model is better than the norm. It is a poor fit if you intend to buy by debit card, where the 3.75% deposit charge undoes the advantage entirely, or if you want a token that only appears on offshore venues. Anyone who will never move past the instant-buy button is paying 1% for a screen, and should compare that against alternatives at Compare before settling.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • ACH, wire, SEPA, Faster Payments, iDEAL and Interac deposits are free
  • Order-book rates run well below the instant-buy rate
  • Publishes proof of reserves

Cons

  • Instant buy costs 1%, against 0.40% maker on the order book
  • Debit card deposits cost 3.75% plus a fixed charge

Guides

  • Address Poisoning and Clipboard Attacks: How They Work and How to Avoid Them

Address poisoning and clipboard hijacking both attack the same habit, which is copying a destination address from somewhere convenient instead of from the recipient, and both are defeated by verifying the full address at the moment you send rather than recognizing the first and last few characters.

  • How to Buy Crypto With a Bank Transfer (ACH, SEPA, Faster Payments, Wire)

Buying crypto with a bank transfer means moving currency from your bank into your exchange account over a domestic payment rail and then placing the order from the cash balance, which is normally the cheapest way to fund an account and differs from card funding mainly in speed and in the withdrawal holds that follow.

  • Buying Crypto With PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay

Apple Pay and Google Pay are wrappers around a card you already hold, so on an exchange they are priced and treated exactly like a card deposit, while PayPal is a separate funding method with its own availability and its own fees, and all three settle instantly and then sit under a withdrawal hold.
