About World Liberty Financial
What World Liberty Financial is
World Liberty Financial (WLFI) is the governance token of the World Liberty Financial Protocol. Its documentation is unusually blunt about scope: "The sole purpose of the WLFI token is to participate in governance of the World Liberty Financial Protocol," and the token "is not intended for use outside of governance" (source: World Liberty Financial documentation, September 2026). Total supply is fixed at 100,000,000,000 tokens.
The project is a decentralized finance venture whose products include the USD1 stablecoin and a lending market where users borrow USD1 against collateral. WLFI votes on the protocol's direction; it does not confer ownership of the company.
How it works
Governance runs in three stages. Token holders submit proposals to a public forum for discussion, proposals enter a review period where the community can question and refine them, and then holders vote on Snapshot. Voting is off-chain, so it costs no gas, and a snapshot of token ownership is taken when a proposal is approved for voting. Only holders in that snapshot may vote. The standard voting period is roughly two weeks.
Two constraints shape outcomes. A proposal requires a quorum of 1,000,000,000 WLFI voted plus approval by a majority of tokens cast, and no single holder may vote more than 5,000,000,000 tokens, which is 5% of total supply. If a holder controls more than that across multiple wallets, voting power is capped. Tokens held in treasury by World Liberty Financial are not votable. The project's separately published risk disclosures, updated 3 March 2026, describe quorum as a minimum of 5% of total votable supply; the two figures come from different pages and are worth reconciling against the current documents before relying on either.
There is also a screening step that distinguishes this from most token governance. All proposals "are screened by World Liberty Financial LLC prior to being approved for voting," and the company "reserves the right to disallow any proposal that, if implemented, would create an unreasonable legal, contractual, or security risk." Decisions on proposal eligibility are made at the company's discretion and are described as final.
Within the wider product set, WLFI sits alongside USD1, which the project markets as its dollar stablecoin, and WLFI Markets, where users borrow USD1 against collateral. Those products generate the activity that governance votes on.

The co-founder allocation is assigned to DT Marks, AMG, and WC Digital Fi, LLC. Those tokens, and the team and advisor tokens, were locked at launch with an unlock schedule the documentation describes as still to be determined.
Unlocks for early buyers have been staged. On or around 1 September 2025, 20% of tokens purchased in the public rounds became available for unlocking, conditional on signing a Token Unlock Agreement. On or around 6 May 2026, a governance proposal established a schedule for the rest. It covers 17,043,666,558 WLFI, runs on a two-year cliff followed by two years of linear unlocking, begins in year two from the proposal date and completes by year four. Accepting it is opt-in; holders who do not accept keep their tokens locked indefinitely while retaining full governance use, and no tokens are burned under the schedule.
The token became tradable following a governance vote, which the project's website describes as the community's decision.
History
World Liberty Financial sold WLFI to the public between October 2024 and March 2025, raising $550 million across two priced rounds. Tokens were non-transferable at first and held in buyers' wallets, usable for governance but not for trading.
The first 20% unlock arrived around 1 September 2025. Tradability followed a governance vote. The structured unlock for remaining early-supporter tokens passed around 6 May 2026. The project also published a MiCA whitepaper, the disclosure document required for token offerings in the European Union.

Risks and what to watch
Read the issuer's own risk disclosures before anything else. They state that the tokens "provide no rights other than governance rights," that holders "have no other rights, including no economic or other rights," and that "you should have no expectation to profit as a result of any proposed or future rights or features." They add that WLFI confers no governance rights over World Liberty Financial LLC or its affiliates, and no entitlement to dividends, airdrops or distributions.
Company control over the governance process is a structural limitation. A protocol where proposals are screened by a company, and where that company's eligibility decisions are final, is a different arrangement from one where token holders alone set the agenda.
Concentration cuts two ways. A 5,000,000,000-token voting cap limits any single holder's influence, but a 30% co-founder allocation with an undetermined unlock schedule leaves a large block whose future circulation is unknown.
The disclosures also name brand dependence explicitly, warning that interest in governance could change with "the popularity of the WLF or Donald Trump brand, or termination of service agreements providing rights to be associated with that brand." That is the issuer's own framing of a reputational and contractual dependency.
Finally, governance participation itself is a risk the issuer flags: if too few holders vote, proposals fail to reach quorum and the token's only stated function goes unused.
Frequently asked questions
What does the WLFI token actually do?
It votes on governance proposals for the World Liberty Financial Protocol. The issuer states this is its sole purpose and that it carries no economic rights.
How many WLFI tokens exist?
The total supply is fixed at 100,000,000,000, reported at roughly 99,946,076,584 as of September 2026.
Is WLFI the same as USD1?
No. USD1 is the project's dollar stablecoin, a separate asset. WLFI is the governance token. Holding one does not give you a claim on the other.
When do locked WLFI tokens unlock?
Early buyers unlocked 20% around 1 September 2025. A governance proposal passed around 6 May 2026 set a two-year cliff and two-year linear unlock for 17,043,666,558 more, opt-in. Co-founder and team allocations have no published schedule.

Guides
- Self-Custody vs Exchange Custody: How to Decide
Deciding between self-custody and exchange custody means choosing which failure you would rather be exposed to, a company that loses or freezes your assets or a mistake of your own that nobody can undo, and most people resolve it by splitting holdings rather than picking one for everything.
- How to Verify a Token Contract Address Before You Buy
A token's contract address is its only real identity, so verifying one means getting the address from the project's own official channel, confirming the same address independently from a second source, and checking on a block explorer that the contract is what it claims to be before you trade against it.
- Choosing Your First Crypto Wallet
Choosing a first wallet comes down to one question, whether a company holds your keys or you do, and the right answer depends on how much you hold, how often you move it, and how confident you are about storing a recovery phrase safely for years.
