What Canton is
Canton is a public blockchain built for regulated capital markets, and its native token is Canton Coin, ticker CC. The network describes itself as "the only public chain with privacy" and as "the first privacy-enabled open blockchain network" (canton.network, as of September 2026). The problem it sets out to solve is specific: banks and market infrastructure providers want the settlement properties of a shared ledger without publishing their positions and counterparties to everyone else on it.
Canton Coin pays for network capacity and rewards the operators who run the network. It is not a general-purpose retail payments coin.
How it works
The coordinating layer is the Global Synchronizer, which Canton describes as "the decentralized interoperability backbone of the Canton Network." Two operator roles run underneath it. Super Validators operate sequencer nodes and participate in consensus using CometBFT, maintaining the broader network state. Validators host parties and user wallets, process transactions, and contribute to network liveness (docs.dev.sync.global, September 2026). The split matters: a bank running a Validator node serves its own users and applications, while Super Validators order and finalize what the network agrees on.
Privacy is the design's organizing principle rather than an add-on. Canton's model is that participants see the transactions they are party to and not the ones they are not, which is what makes the network usable by institutions that cannot disclose client activity. This is the opposite of the default on most public chains, where every transaction is visible to anyone with a block explorer.
Network capacity is metered as traffic. To transact, a Validator purchases traffic on the synchronizer, and that purchase consumes Canton Coin. The same coin covers other on-chain costs, including transfers of Canton Coin itself and entries in the Canton Name Service.
Supply and tokenomics
Canton Coin has both a minting side and a burning side, and both are documented by the network.
New Canton Coin is created through mining rounds that distribute rewards to participants, and burned in several documented ways. The largest burn is capacity: the docs describe "coin burnt for purchasing traffic on the synchronizer."

The result is a token whose issuance is tied to operating the network and whose destruction is tied to using it. Activity that consumes capacity removes coin from supply, while activity that provides capacity creates it.
