Crypto Regulation in Canada
Buying cryptocurrency is legal in Canada, and two separate registrations govern the platforms that serve you. Any business exchanging or transferring virtual currency must register with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada as a money services business, or as a foreign money services business if it reaches Canadians from abroad, and must then meet identity verification, record keeping and reporting duties under Canadian anti-money-laundering law. Separately, the Canadian Securities Administrators regulate crypto trading platforms through the provincial securities regulators. As of September 2026, the Canadian Securities Administrators and the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization expect crypto trading platforms to hold full investment dealer registration and organization membership rather than continue under the earlier interim undertakings, which is why the set of platforms open to Canadian residents is narrower than the global market. New rules covering the agents a registered business uses took effect on 1 October 2025, and arrangements predating that date must be verified by 1 October 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is crypto legal in Canada?
- 5 exchanges we have verified serve residents of Canada. We have not recorded a jurisdiction-wide restriction. See the regulation section on this page for detail.
- Can I use Crypto.com Exchange in Canada?
- With limits. Limit does not apply in Manitoba, Alberta, Quebec or British Columbia. Derivatives are also restricted for Canada.
- Do I pay tax on crypto in Canada?
- As of September 2026, section 38 of Canada's Income Tax Act makes one half of a capital gain taxable. That half is added to your income for the year and taxed at your marginal rate. Selling crypto for dollars, trading one coin for another, or spending it are all disposals that can produce a gain. Whether the result is a capital gain or business income depends on the character of the activity, so frequent and commercially organised trading is taxed in full as business income while an investor's occasional disposal falls under the capital gains rules.
