Crypto Regulation in the United Arab Emirates
Buying cryptocurrency is legal in the United Arab Emirates, but which regulator applies depends on where the platform sits. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority licenses virtual asset activity across the Emirate of Dubai, both mainland and free zones, except inside the Dubai International Financial Centre, which the Dubai Financial Services Authority regulates and whose crypto token framework was updated on 12 January 2026. Abu Dhabi Global Market is separate again, supervised by its Financial Services Regulatory Authority, which permits only assets it has accepted. At federal level the former Securities and Commodities Authority, now the Capital Market Authority, issued a virtual assets framework on 13 April 2026. Dubai's licences are granted activity by activity, covering exchange services, broker-dealer services, custody, lending, advisory, management and transfers, so a platform must apply for each one it offers. As of September 2026 marketing is also regulated: since 1 October 2024 promotions must carry prescribed risk warnings.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is crypto legal in the United Arab Emirates?
- 13 exchanges we have verified serve residents of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority prohibits issuing anonymity-enhanced cryptocurrencies and every virtual asset activity related to them across the Emirate. See the regulation section on this page for detail.
- Can I use Crypto.com Exchange in the United Arab Emirates?
- Yes. Crypto.com Exchange serves United Arab Emirates residents. UAE is not on either restricted list. AED cash deposits exist but are documented for institutions only.
- Do I pay tax on crypto in the United Arab Emirates?
- The United Arab Emirates levies no personal income tax, so an individual buying and selling crypto as a private investment pays nothing on the gain. Corporate tax, introduced at 9 percent, reaches a natural person only where they carry on a business in the country and its turnover passes 1 million dirhams in a calendar year. The Federal Tax Authority states that personal investment income is excluded from business activity for this purpose, alongside real estate investment income and wages. As of September 2026 that leaves ordinary retail crypto investing untaxed, while trading as a business can fall within corporate tax.
