About Shiba Inu

What Shiba Inu is

Shiba Inu is a memecoin that has been built out into a multi-token ecosystem with its own layer-2 network. SHIB is the ecosystem's foundation token. The project's documentation describes SHIB as the "foundation token of the ecosystem," with its primary use being basic governance participation, and shib.io presents itself as "home of the Shiba Inu (SHIB) Ecosystem" (docs.shib.io and shib.io, as of September 2026).

SHIB began with no technical claim and no roadmap. What exists around it today, a layer 2 chain, a dex, a naming service and a DAO, was constructed afterwards.

How it works

SHIB is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. It has no chain of its own, no mining, and no consensus role. Its function within the ecosystem is participation in basic governance.

The ecosystem uses four tokens with separated roles, and the separation is the thing to understand. Per the project's documentation as of September 2026:

SHIB is the foundation token, used for basic governance participation. BONE is described as the primary governance and staking asset and as the native token of Shibarium, used for validator staking and major governance decisions. LEASH is a deliberately scarce asset offering "enhanced governance rights, special ecosystem features," with intentionally limited availability. TREAT is positioned for "rewards distribution, future ecosystem features."

Shibarium is the ecosystem's own network, described in the documentation as an Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution incubated by Shib.io, running proof of stake consensus with "low gas fees and fast transaction processing." Its chain ID is 109 and its native currency symbol is BONE (docs.shib.io, September 2026). This is the detail most often confused: BONE, not SHIB, pays gas on Shibarium.

The wider ecosystem, as listed on shib.io, includes ShibaSwap as its decentralized exchange, a bridge to Shibarium, ShibDAO, ShibIdentity, an SNS naming service, a DappStore, metaverse and nft components, and the Shib Alpha Layer.

Supply and tokenomics

SHIB has a very large fixed token supply issued at creation as an ERC-20 contract, with no protocol-level emission schedule and no staking rewards paid out of new issuance at the base token level. Exact total and circulating supply figures should be read from the token contract on-chain or from the project's own published figures rather than taken from secondary sources.

The four ecosystem tokens have distinct supplies and distribution histories, and they are not interchangeable. BONE's supply matters separately again, because it functions as Shibarium's gas and staking asset, which ties it to network usage in a way SHIB is not tied.

The ecosystem has publicized burn activity as a recurring theme, and burning reduces circulating supply by sending tokens to addresses from which they cannot be recovered. Treat burn statistics with the same scrutiny you would apply to any self-reported figure: verify the destination address and the amount on-chain before drawing conclusions from a headline number. A burn removes tokens; it does not create demand.

SHIB holders receive no fee revenue from Shibarium by protocol design, since network fees there are paid in BONE. Any yield offered on SHIB is a product of whatever platform is offering it, with that platform's risk.

History

Shiba Inu launched as a memecoin on Ethereum with no functional claim beyond being a token. It gained a very large holder base through distribution and attention rather than through utility, which is the defining characteristic of the category.

The ecosystem was assembled afterwards. ShibaSwap gave the project a decentralized exchange and a place for its secondary tokens to trade and be staked. LEASH and BONE introduced a tiered token structure, with BONE eventually taking on the role of gas and staking asset for the ecosystem's own network. TREAT was added for rewards and future features.

Shibarium is the most substantial technical addition: an Ethereum layer-2 chain with proof-of-stake consensus, chain ID 109, and BONE as its native currency. Around it the project has layered a naming service, an identity component, a DAO, a DappStore, and metaverse and NFT initiatives.

Risks and what to watch

Memecoin dynamics are the primary risk and they are not incidental. SHIB's price history has been driven by attention, and assets in this category are subject to sharp volatility and to periods where liquidity disappears in the direction you want to trade. See memecoin for the general pattern.

Holder concentration is worth checking rather than assuming. Tokens distributed widely at launch can still end up concentrated, and a small number of large addresses can move a thin market. See whale.

The four-token structure is a practical hazard as much as a design. SHIB, LEASH, BONE and TREAT are separate assets with separate supplies, separate roles and separate prices, and holding one gives you nothing in the others. Confirm which token an offer, a staking product, or an exchange listing actually refers to.

Shibarium is a layer-2 network with its own bridge, and bridges have been the single largest category of loss in decentralized finance. Moving assets between Ethereum and Shibarium involves that mechanism, and BONE is required for gas once you are there.

Impersonation is endemic in this part of the market. Tokens with nearly identical names and copied branding are common, and contract addresses should be confirmed from the project's own site before any transaction. See phishing and rug pull.

The ecosystem's roadmap includes components at varying stages of completion. Distinguish what is live from what is announced before assigning weight to either. Availability of SHIB varies by venue and jurisdiction; see where to buy Shiba Inu and Exchanges.

Frequently asked questions

What is SHIB used for?

Per the project's documentation, SHIB is the foundation token of the ecosystem and its primary use is basic governance participation. It is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. It is not the gas token of the ecosystem's own network, and it carries no consensus role.

What is the difference between SHIB, BONE, LEASH and TREAT?

They are four separate tokens with separate roles. SHIB is the foundation token for basic governance. BONE is the primary governance and staking asset and is Shibarium's native currency. LEASH is intentionally scarce and confers enhanced governance rights and special ecosystem features. TREAT is for rewards distribution and future features.

What is Shibarium?

An Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution incubated by Shib.io, running proof-of-stake consensus with low gas fees and fast transaction processing. Its chain ID is 109 and its native currency symbol is BONE. Interacting with it requires bridging assets and holding BONE for gas.

Does holding SHIB earn anything?

Not from the protocol. SHIB has no native staking or fee-sharing mechanism, and Shibarium's fees are paid in BONE rather than SHIB. Yield offered on SHIB comes from a platform providing that product, and carries that platform's counterparty risk rather than being paid by the network.

How many SHIB are there?

SHIB has a very large fixed supply set at the creation of its ERC-20 contract, with no ongoing protocol issuance. Read the current total and circulating figures from the contract on-chain or from the project's own published data, and verify any burn statistics against the burn addresses directly rather than relying on a headline figure.

Guides

  • Self-Custody vs Exchange Custody: How to Decide

Deciding between self-custody and exchange custody means choosing which failure you would rather be exposed to, a company that loses or freezes your assets or a mistake of your own that nobody can undo, and most people resolve it by splitting holdings rather than picking one for everything.

  • How to Verify a Token Contract Address Before You Buy

A token's contract address is its only real identity, so verifying one means getting the address from the project's own official channel, confirming the same address independently from a second source, and checking on a block explorer that the contract is what it claims to be before you trade against it.

  • Choosing Your First Crypto Wallet

Choosing a first wallet comes down to one question, whether a company holds your keys or you do, and the right answer depends on how much you hold, how often you move it, and how confident you are about storing a recovery phrase safely for years.
