About OKB

What OKB is

OKB is the native gas token of X Layer, an Ethereum-compatible layer 2 network built by OKX. The project describes OKB as "X Layer's native gas token, the key to the blockchain's operations and governance" (source: OKX X Layer page, September 2026). Every transaction on X Layer is paid for in OKB, and OKB is also staked to operate market venues on the network.

That is a different role from the one OKB played for most of its life. It began as an exchange token, used chiefly for trading-fee discounts and platform benefits at OKX. Its stated purpose today is chain infrastructure.

How it works

X Layer is positioned as "an EVM Layer 2 built for the next generation of onchain financial markets." Because it is Ethereum-compatible, existing Solidity contracts and Ethereum development tools work on it, and OKB pays the network fee the way ether does on Ethereum. As of September 2026, OKX publishes network figures of roughly $0.0005 average cost per transaction, one-second block time, around 5,000 average transactions per second, and more than four million total addresses (source: OKX X Layer page).

The architecture splits into two environments. X Layer EVM "anchors assets and enforces governance," acting as the settlement and asset layer. X Layer TradeZone "handles high-frequency matching and execution," which is where order matching happens at speeds a general-purpose EVM cannot reach. Separating custody and governance from matching is a common design for on-chain trading systems, since the two workloads have very different latency requirements.

On top of that sits Exchange OS, which OKX describes as "a major upgrade to X Layer" and an "open market protocol for any builder to deploy their own spot, perps, or outcome market." This is where OKB's staking role comes in: OKX states that "anyone can stake OKB to deploy and operate a market venue." Venues deployed this way share liquidity, and the design gives a user "one account, one balance, and one platform" across markets rather than isolated books.

The published roadmap for 2026 lists the Exchange OS announcement in the second quarter as in progress, open market deployment in the third quarter, and protocol upgrades and optimization in the fourth (source: OKX, September 2026). Anyone evaluating OKB's utility should treat much of the venue-deployment functionality as forthcoming rather than mature.

Supply and tokenomics

OKB's utility is straightforward: it pays gas on X Layer, it is staked to deploy and run market venues, and it carries governance weight on the network.

Its supply mechanics are harder to state responsibly. OKB has historically run a buy-back-and-burn program funded by exchange revenue, and OKX has announced changes to the token's economic model, linking from the X Layer page to an "announcement on optimizing the OKB gas token economic model." That announcement's terms could not be retrieved from a primary source for this entry, and OKX does not publish total supply, maximum supply or a burn schedule on the X Layer page itself.

What OKX does and does not publish about OKB's supply on its X Layer page.

Protocol-level inflationNone; supply changes come from issuer actionsOKX X Layer page, September 2026

This page therefore states no supply figure and no burn total for OKB. Read circulating supply and total supply from the data on this page or from OKX's own token disclosures, and verify any claim about burns or supply caps against a dated OKX announcement before relying on it. OKB's supply has been changed by issuer decision more than once, which is precisely why a stale figure is dangerous.

There is no protocol-level inflation of the kind a proof of stake layer-1 pays to validators. New OKB does not appear from block production; supply changes come from issuer actions.

History

OKB launched in 2018 as OKX's exchange token, in the wave of platform tokens that followed the ico cycle. Its early utility was fee discounts, access to token sales on the exchange's launch platform, and other account benefits, supported by periodic buy-backs and burns funded from exchange revenue.

The pivot came with X Layer, OKX's Ethereum layer-2 network, which made OKB the chain's gas asset rather than purely an exchange loyalty token. Exchange OS extended that further, adding staking to deploy market venues and governance over the network. As of September 2026 the X Layer roadmap treats permissionless market deployment as upcoming rather than shipped.

Risks and what to watch

Issuer dependence is the defining risk. OKB's supply policy, burn schedule and economic model are set by OKX rather than by an immutable protocol rule, and they have been revised. A token whose scarcity depends on a company's discretion carries a different risk profile from one whose issuance is fixed in code.

That dependence extends to demand. OKB's utility is concentrated in one network and one company's product suite. If X Layer activity does not materialize, gas demand for OKB does not either, and the token falls back on whatever exchange utility remains.

Regulatory exposure follows the exchange. OKX operates across many jurisdictions and its availability varies considerably; an exchange-linked asset inherits some of that variability. Availability of OKB itself, and of the venues that list it, differs by country and by US state.

Finally, the roadmap risk. Exchange OS is the main argument for OKB's staking utility, and as of September 2026 substantial parts of it are still scheduled rather than live. Judge the token on what is deployed, and treat the roadmap as intent.

Frequently asked questions

What is X Layer?

An Ethereum-compatible layer-2 network built by OKX, aimed at on-chain financial markets. OKB is its native gas token, and the network splits into X Layer EVM for assets and governance and X Layer TradeZone for high-frequency matching.

Is OKB still an exchange token?

Its stated primary role as of September 2026 is as X Layer's gas and governance token. Exchange-linked utility has historically been part of the picture, but OKX's current documentation frames OKB around the network.

Can I stake OKB?

OKX states that anyone can stake OKB to deploy and operate a market venue on X Layer under Exchange OS. That capability is tied to the Exchange OS rollout rather than to a general-purpose validator staking system.

How many OKB are there?

OKX does not publish total or maximum supply on its X Layer page, and its economic model has been revised. Check a current, dated OKX disclosure rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere.

Where can I buy OKB?

OKB is listed on OKX and on a smaller set of other venues. See where to buy OKB for what is available in your jurisdiction, and Exchanges for how those venues compare.

Guides

  • Self-Custody vs Exchange Custody: How to Decide

Deciding between self-custody and exchange custody means choosing which failure you would rather be exposed to, a company that loses or freezes your assets or a mistake of your own that nobody can undo, and most people resolve it by splitting holdings rather than picking one for everything.

  • How to Verify a Token Contract Address Before You Buy

A token's contract address is its only real identity, so verifying one means getting the address from the project's own official channel, confirming the same address independently from a second source, and checking on a block explorer that the contract is what it claims to be before you trade against it.

  • Choosing Your First Crypto Wallet

Choosing a first wallet comes down to one question, whether a company holds your keys or you do, and the right answer depends on how much you hold, how often you move it, and how confident you are about storing a recovery phrase safely for years.
