About Virtuals Protocol
What Virtuals Protocol is
Virtuals Protocol is a platform for launching and funding AI agents as tradeable tokens. Its white paper describes the project as "a society of AI agents, a coordinated, onchain ecosystem where autonomous agents have identity, capital, jobs, markets, governance, and, increasingly, bodies in the physical world" (source: Virtuals Protocol white paper, read September 2026). VIRTUAL is the network's base asset: every agent token is paired against it, and every purchase of an agent token routes through it.
Two layers do the work. The capital markets layer turns an agent into a token with a launch curve and a liquidity pool. The commerce layer, called the Agent Commerce Protocol, is described in the white paper as "the commerce layer, a framework that enables secure, transparent, and verifiable commerce between autonomous AI agents," with "every transaction immutably recorded onchain for auditability and trust."
How it works
A launch begins on a bonding curve. The white paper states that creators pay 100 VIRTUAL to establish that curve, after which anyone can buy the agent's token from it. Buying pushes the price up along the curve and accumulates VIRTUAL as the curve's reserve.
Graduation is the moment the curve is replaced by a real market. The white paper says "graduation happens when total liquidity reaches ~41.6K $VIRTUAL," a threshold it elsewhere rounds to 42,000 VIRTUAL. At that point a permanent liquidity pool is created from what the curve collected, and the resulting lp token position is, in the white paper's words, "staked and locked for 10 years."
That lock is the structural answer to a specific failure mode. On most launchpads the party who seeds liquidity can withdraw it, which is the mechanical form of a rug pull. A decade-long lock on the pool position removes that lever from the agent's creator.
The platform describes itself as "a fully modular agent tokenization platform" that lets founders "compose the right capital structure for their project from independent primitives," and names anti-sniper protection, automated capital formation, trial-based 60-day launches and growth allocations paired with VIRTUAL liquidity among those primitives. Anti-sniper measures target front running at the moment a curve opens, when a bot buying in the first block can otherwise capture most of the early supply.
The consequence for VIRTUAL itself is that demand for the token is mechanical rather than narrative. Because every agent pool is denominated in VIRTUAL, creating an agent requires acquiring VIRTUAL to form that pool, and trading any agent token requires holding VIRTUAL first.
Supply and tokenomics
VIRTUAL has a fixed supply and no inflation. The white paper states a supply of 1 billion tokens with no future issuance, and says all tokens are "fully unlocked and vested" at launch, which removes the cliff-and-unlock schedule that shapes most token launches.

The 35% ecosystem treasury is the part worth watching over time. It is controlled by DAO governance and capped at no more than 10% annually for three years, so the maximum treasury-driven sell pressure in any year is bounded by that rule rather than by a fixed unlock calendar. A cap set by governance is a cap governance can revisit.
History
The design reads as a sequence of responses to how earlier launchpads failed. Fair-launch platforms produced sniping in the opening seconds, liquidity that creators could pull, and tokens whose entire lifecycle was over within hours. Virtuals Protocol answers each of those in the same launch flow: a curve that holds supply before a pool exists, anti-sniper protection at the open, a graduation threshold that has to be met with real capital, and a pool position locked for ten years afterward.
The Agent Commerce Protocol extends the same idea past the launch. Once agents are tokenized entities with wallets, they need a way to buy services from one another and a record that a service was actually delivered. The white paper frames that as verifiable commerce between autonomous agents, recorded on chain for auditability.
The 60-day trial launch format sits between the two. It gives an agent a bounded window to demonstrate usage before it takes on the permanent structure of a graduated token.
Risks and what to watch
Concentration is the first thing to watch. VIRTUAL's demand comes from agent launches and agent trading, so a slowdown in that activity reduces the mechanical demand described above. The token's utility is tied to one platform's throughput.
Governance is a live dependency. The ecosystem treasury holds 35% of supply, the annual spend cap is a governance parameter, and the same governance sets launch rules. Watch who holds voting power and how concentrated it is.
Smart contract risk applies at two levels. The curve, the graduation logic and the locker are smart contract code, and so is every agent token launched through them. A flaw in the shared infrastructure would affect all of them at once.
Market microstructure risk is real on curve launches. Even with anti-sniper protection, early buys on a fresh curve face steep price impact and slippage, and thin pools after graduation can move sharply on modest size.
Finally, the AI layer is the least verifiable part. An agent token's value proposition rests on what the agent actually does, and on-chain records prove that a transaction occurred, not that the service behind it was worth what was paid.
Frequently asked questions
What is VIRTUAL used for?
It is the base asset of the platform. Every agent token's liquidity pool is paired against VIRTUAL, opening a launch curve costs 100 VIRTUAL, and buying an agent token requires acquiring VIRTUAL first.
What is the total supply of VIRTUAL?
1 billion tokens, with no future inflation. The white paper states that all tokens are fully unlocked and vested at launch.
What does graduation mean?
An agent's launch curve closes once it has accumulated roughly 41,600 VIRTUAL of liquidity. The collected VIRTUAL seeds a permanent liquidity pool, and the resulting position is staked and locked for 10 years.
Does locked liquidity make an agent token safe?
No. It prevents the creator from withdrawing pool liquidity. It says nothing about whether the agent works, whether anyone will trade the token, or how concentrated its holders are.
Where can you buy Virtuals Protocol?
VIRTUAL trades on centralized venues and on decentralized exchanges. See where to buy Virtuals Protocol for availability in your jurisdiction and Exchanges to compare fees and kyc requirements.

Guides
- Self-Custody vs Exchange Custody: How to Decide
Deciding between self-custody and exchange custody means choosing which failure you would rather be exposed to, a company that loses or freezes your assets or a mistake of your own that nobody can undo, and most people resolve it by splitting holdings rather than picking one for everything.
- How to Verify a Token Contract Address Before You Buy
A token's contract address is its only real identity, so verifying one means getting the address from the project's own official channel, confirming the same address independently from a second source, and checking on a block explorer that the contract is what it claims to be before you trade against it.
- Choosing Your First Crypto Wallet
Choosing a first wallet comes down to one question, whether a company holds your keys or you do, and the right answer depends on how much you hold, how often you move it, and how confident you are about storing a recovery phrase safely for years.
