About Midnight

What Midnight is

Midnight is a blockchain built so that applications can prove things about data without publishing the data. Its documentation calls it "a data protection blockchain platform" whose central capability is "selective disclosure - the ability to prove facts about data without revealing the data itself" (source: Midnight documentation, read September 2026). NIGHT is the network's token, and it works in an unusual pair with a second resource called DUST.

The architecture keeps two kinds of state side by side. Public state is stored on chain for all participants. Private state is described as "encrypted data stored locally by users, never exposed to the network." A contract can read both and prove a result from them.

How it works

The proving system is zk-SNARKs. The documentation says they let the network "verify computations without seeing the input data" and "generate compact proofs (128 bytes) regardless of computation complexity." A fixed 128-byte proof for an arbitrarily complex computation is what makes the model practical: verification cost does not grow with the work being proved.

Writing those contracts does not require cryptographic expertise, at least by design. The documentation states that "Midnight introduces Compact, a domain-specific language based on TypeScript," aimed at developers who want privacy-preserving contracts without building circuits by hand.

Midnight connects to Cardano rather than standing alone. The documentation says the platform "maintains a native bridge to Cardano for asset transfers, enabling interoperability between the two chains," and its concept pages treat Midnight as a partner chain rather than an isolated network.

The token design is where Midnight is genuinely unusual. The documentation calls it dual-component tokenomics: NIGHT is "the unshielded utility token used for staking, securing the network, and governance," while DUST is "a non-tradable, shielded resource that holding NIGHT generates automatically and is used for fees and utility purposes."

Users never buy gas. Holding NIGHT generates DUST, DUST pays fees, and DUST cannot be sold. The documentation states the separation plainly: DUST is "shielded and non-transferable: DUST is a shielded capacity resource only for gas. You cannot transfer DUST between users."

The stated reason is predictability. By "treating blockchain capacity as a tokenized resource, users can plan their future service needs without being at the mercy of fluctuating market prices," and validator rewards stay stable independently of transaction demand. The documentation frames this as an answer to what it calls the single-token trilemma, the difficulty of one token serving viability, decentralization and price stability at once.

The time-to-cap result is worth understanding because it is counterintuitive. Because both the generation rate and the cap scale with the amount of NIGHT held, the time to fill is identical for every holder. The documentation does the arithmetic: the ratio of the cap to the rate is roughly 604,800 seconds, "that is where the 'about one week' generation time comes from." A holder of 100 NIGHT and a holder of a million both reach their respective caps in a week.

Decay is symmetric. Once the utxo backing a DUST balance is spent, DUST declines at the same rate it accumulated. It can still be spent while decaying, and the decay rate does not change.

History

Midnight approaches privacy differently from the established privacy coin designs. Those chains shield transaction amounts and participants. Midnight shields application data, and its target case is a contract that proves a fact about private inputs, such as eligibility or a threshold being met, without the inputs ever reaching the network.

The concept documentation reflects a broad research base. It covers Kachina, Zswap, fully homomorphic encryption, comparisons of zk-SNARKs with zk-STARKs, and comparisons of zero-knowledge approaches with FHE and multi-party computation. That is the vocabulary of a platform designed around a family of techniques rather than around a single circuit.

Compact is the practical bet. Basing the contract language on TypeScript rather than on a circuit description language is a decision about who is expected to write privacy applications, and it is the same bet Solidity made about EVM developers.

Risks and what to watch

Token opacity is a real gap for a holder. Without a published supply figure or distribution schedule in the documentation read, future NIGHT issuance and unlocks cannot be verified from a primary source.

Cryptographic risk is inherent to any zk-SNARK system. Proof soundness depends on the implementation and on the parameters behind it, and a flaw in a proving system is not visible from the outside until it is exploited.

Bridge risk applies to the Cardano connection. Assets moving between the two chains depend on that bridge, and bridges have historically been the weakest component in multi-chain designs.

The fee model itself is a usability risk as much as an economic one. A new user with no NIGHT has no DUST and therefore cannot transact until they acquire NIGHT and wait for generation, and the documentation's own numbers put a full DUST balance about a week away.

Regulatory attention follows privacy features. Chains offering shielded state have faced delisting and jurisdictional restrictions elsewhere, and a holder should check availability in their own jurisdiction rather than assume it.
