Fees explained
Binance charges one flat rate at the entry tier rather than splitting maker and taker. The rates below apply as of September 2026 to a regular user with no volume history, and paying fees in BNB takes 25% off both sides (source: Binance spot fee schedule). Everything below that tier is earned through a combination of 30-day volume and BNB holdings.
| Side | Standard rate | Paying fees in BNB |
|---|---|---|
| Maker | 0.100% | near 0.075% |
| Taker | 0.100% | near 0.075% |
The trading fee is only part of what a purchase costs. What you pay to move fiat in is set per region and per method and is published separately from the trading schedule, so look up the funding page for your country before treating 0.100% as the all-in number. Binance also publishes proof of reserves built from a Merkle tree with zk-SNARK verification, so you can check that your own balance was included (source: Binance proof of reserves page).
A cost estimate for a $500 purchase on Binance and OKX appears here once the published fee schedules are verified.
History and ownership
Binance is not one company. A Commodity Futures Trading Commission complaint filed on 27 March 2023 described the platform as operated by Binance Holdings Limited, Binance Holdings (IE) Limited and Binance (Services) Holdings Limited together, with founder Changpeng Zhao as owner and chief executive, through what the agency called an intentionally opaque common enterprise (source: CFTC press release 8680-23).
The scale is not disputed. The US Treasury described Binance in November 2023 as the world's largest virtual currency exchange, responsible for an estimated 60% of centralized virtual currency spot trading (source: US Treasury press release, 21 November 2023).
Ownership matters here more than it does at a listed company. There are no audited public financials, no quarterly reports, and no register entry that names the ultimate beneficial owners of every operating entity. What you can read instead are the settlement documents, which is a poorer substitute but a substantial one.
Products and markets
As of September 2026, Binance's public market data API lists 1,358 spot pairs trading across 486 base assets and 26 quote currencies (source: Binance public market data API). The quote list is the part that separates Binance from most competitors: alongside Tether, USDC and Bitcoin it includes dirhams, Argentine pesos, Brazilian reais, Colombian pesos, euros, rupiah, yen, tenge, Mexican pesos, lira, hryvnia and rand.
That breadth is the reason to look at Binance from outside the United States. A local-currency order book removes one conversion step and the spread that comes with it. It also means availability is country-specific in a way a single global asset list does not capture, so check the jurisdiction page before assuming a pair is open to you.
Security record and custody
Binance publishes proof of reserves using a Merkle tree with zk-SNARK verification, letting an account holder confirm that their own balance was included in the snapshot without exposing other users' data (source: Binance proof of reserves page). That is a stronger construction than a plain Merkle proof. It still shows assets, not liabilities owed elsewhere, so it is not an audit.
The enforcement record is the largest of any exchange covered here, and it is fully documented. On 21 November 2023, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network assessed a civil money penalty of $3.4 billion, imposed a five-year monitorship, and required compliance undertakings including Binance's complete exit from the United States, while the Office of Foreign Assets Control assessed a further $968 million (source: US Treasury press release, 21 November 2023). Treasury described the conduct as failing to report suspicious transactions involving terrorist groups, ransomware actors and money launderers, and matching trades between US users and users in sanctioned jurisdictions including Iran, North Korea, Syria and Crimea.
The same day, the CFTC announced a proposed consent order requiring Binance to disgorge $1.35 billion and pay a $1.35 billion civil penalty, with Zhao personally paying $150 million, and permanently enjoining the companies from operating an illegal derivatives exchange or failing to keep adequate kyc controls (source: CFTC press release 8825-23).
Deposits and withdrawals
Deposit costs are the weak point in Binance's disclosure. Card, bank transfer and local-rail charges are set per region and published on country funding pages rather than on the global fee schedule, so the flat 0.100% trading rate tells you very little about the cost of a purchase funded from a bank account.
Work it in the other order. Find the funding methods available in your country first, price those, then add the trading fee. The presence of a local fiat pair usually signals a cheaper route than buying a stablecoin elsewhere and transferring it in, but confirm the rail before you commit. Availability by country is covered on pages such as United Kingdom, and the asset-level picture is at Buy Bitcoin.
Support and usability
Binance is built for people who already know what they are doing. The interface carries spot, margin, derivatives, earn products and launch programs in one account, which is efficient once you know your way around and overwhelming before then. Fee discounts depend on holding BNB and on rolling volume, so your effective rate changes without you doing anything.
The monitorship imposed in 2023 runs for five years, which means compliance requirements at Binance are still being supervised as of September 2026 (source: US Treasury press release, 21 November 2023). Expect identity checks and source-of-funds questions to be stricter than the platform's reputation from earlier years suggests.

Binance fits an experienced trader outside the United States who wants a local-currency pair, a low flat rate, and the deepest liquidity available, and who will price the funding leg separately rather than trusting the headline number. The proof-of-reserves construction is better than most. Look elsewhere if you are in the United States, where Binance is required to have exited, or if an unresolved compliance monitorship is something you would rather not have between you and your money. Newcomers will find the interface dense and the fee logic conditional, and a simpler venue costs little more once funding costs are counted. Start from Compare if you want the side-by-side.

Guides
- How Crypto Exchanges Make Money
A crypto exchange earns most of its money from trading fees charged on both sides of every trade, and adds revenue from the spread built into simple buy buttons, deposit and withdrawal charges, listing arrangements, interest on customer balances, and paid products such as staking and derivatives.
- How to Read an Order Book
An order book is a live list of every unfilled buy and sell order for one trading pair, sorted by price, with buyers stacked below the current price and sellers stacked above it, and reading it tells you what your order will actually cost before you place it.
- How to Send Crypto Across Chains Without Losing It
Moving crypto between chains means either routing it through an exchange that accepts deposits on one network and withdrawals on another, or using a bridge that locks the asset on the source chain and issues a wrapped version on the destination, and in both cases the mistake that costs people money is picking the wrong network on the send screen.
