Fees explained

Gemini's cost depends entirely on which interface you use. The ActiveTrader base tier rates below apply as of September 2026, before any volume discount (source: Gemini ActiveTrader fee schedule). That taker rate is high for a US venue, and it applies until your 30-day volume clears the first tier.

Instant and recurring orders placed outside ActiveTrader are priced differently. Gemini says it includes a spread in the quoted price on those orders and that the fee varies with payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, and asset (source: Gemini fee schedule). It does not publish the spread as a number, so you have to read the trade review screen before confirming.

History and ownership

Gemini was founded in 2014 and is now a public company. Gemini Space Station, Inc. trades on Nasdaq under the ticker GEMI, having priced its initial public offering on September 15, 2025 (source: Securities and Exchange Commission filing index for Gemini Space Station, Inc., forms 424B4 and 8-A12B). A listed parent files audited accounts and discloses litigation on a schedule, which gives you far more to check than a private offshore venue offers.

The exchange runs in the United States through Gemini Trust Company, LLC, chartered by the New York State Department of Financial Services as a limited purpose trust company, and Gemini Moonbase, LLC. The company states it holds money transmitter licenses or the statutory equivalent in every state that requires one, so it can operate in all 50 states, and that both entities are registered with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network as money services businesses (source: Gemini Space Station, Inc. annual report on Form 10-K for 2025, filed March 31, 2026).

One change matters if you are outside the United States. In February 2026 Gemini announced plans to exit and wind down operations in the United Kingdom, the European Union and other European jurisdictions, and Australia, in order to concentrate on its US business (source: same Form 10-K). Products and markets

Gemini's public API returned 351 trading symbols in September 2026 (source: Gemini public API, symbols endpoint). The platform covers spot trading through both the simple interface and ActiveTrader, perpetual contracts, staking, an over-the-counter desk, institutional custody, the NYDFS-regulated Gemini Dollar stablecoin, a credit card that pays crypto rewards, and a prediction markets venue launched in December 2025 through an affiliate holding a Designated Contract Market license (source: Gemini Space Station, Inc. The company discontinued the Nifty Gateway digital art marketplace in January 2026 (source: same filing). As of December 31, 2025 it served users in more than 60 countries, with the majority in the United States.

For a US buyer the practical shape is this: ActiveTrader is a real order book with published rates, and the simple buy screen is a convenience product with an unpublished spread. Security record and custody

Gemini Trust Company is a fiduciary and qualified custodian under New York Banking Law, licensed by the state to custody digital assets. Customer assets are segregated using unique addresses that are verifiable on their respective blockchains, private keys sit in hardware security modules that are never connected to the internet, and the company uses multi-party computation alongside offline cold wallet storage (source: Gemini Custody product page and Form 10-K for 2025).

On insurance, Gemini states that as of March 1, 2024 it maintained $125 million in digital asset cover: $25 million of commercial crime insurance for hot wallet holdings and $100 million of cold storage cover (source: Gemini Custody page). It has completed SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2, and ISO 27001 examinations.

The enforcement record is substantial and Gemini discloses it in its own filings. The Securities and Exchange Commission charged Gemini Trust Company on January 12, 2023 over the Earn program, which let customers lend crypto to Genesis. The New York Attorney General sued in October 2023 and Gemini settled in June 2024 by distributing roughly $50 million. On February 28, 2024 Gemini entered a consent order with the New York State Department of Financial Services requiring a $40 million contribution to Earn users and a $37 million civil penalty, paid on March 11, 2024. A Commodity Futures Trading Commission case, filed in June 2022, settled by consent order on January 6, 2025 with a $5 million penalty for statements Gemini reasonably should have known were false or misleading (source: Gemini Space Station, Inc. Deposits and withdrawals

Bank funding is free in both directions and card funding is not (source: Gemini transfer fee schedule). Crypto withdrawal fees are dynamic, set from the network fee for the asset you are sending and displayed before you confirm.

Support and usability

The split between the simple interface and ActiveTrader defines the experience. ActiveTrader gives you charting, multiple order types, and the published fee ladder. The simple screen gives you one button and a price that already contains a margin you cannot see.

Gemini requires two-factor authentication by default, supports hardware security keys, and offers withdrawal address allowlisting, which is the single most useful account control on any exchange (source: Gemini security page). Support runs through a help centre and ticketing, with account coverage for institutional clients.

Verdict

Gemini fits a US buyer who will fund by ACH or wire, trade on ActiveTrader rather than the simple screen, and value a New York trust charter, published insurance figures, and a listed parent that discloses its litigation. For custody-minded holders it is one of the most inspectable options available.

Look elsewhere if you buy small amounts through the simple interface, since the 1.200% base taker rate and the unpublished instant-order spread make that expensive, or if you are in the United Kingdom, the European Union, or Australia, where Gemini has announced it is winding down.
