Fees explained
Bitvavo caps what you can pay rather than quoting one flat rate. As of September 2026, it reserves a maximum fee of 0.25% when you place an order that will not fill immediately, then charges your actual tier at execution and returns the difference if the tier is lower (source: Bitvavo help center, "What is the trading fee when I buy or sell crypto?"). Tiers run on 30-day volume and are recalculated nightly around 01:00 UTC. Pairs quoted in USDC are cheaper than euro pairs.
Funding is where the real choice sits, and the split between the free rails and the 1.00% rails is stark (source: Bitvavo help center, "How can I deposit euro to Bitvavo?"). Card, Apple Pay and PayPal also do not verify a bank account, so you cannot withdraw until you deposit another way.
| Deposit method | Fee |
|---|---|
| SEPA bank transfer | 0% |
| iDEAL | 0% |
| Bancontact | 0% |
| EPS | 0% |
| Credit card | 1.00% |
| Apple Pay | 1.00% |
| PayPal | 1.00% |

History and ownership
Bitvavo B.V. is an Amsterdam company, registered at Keizersgracht 281 and identified in the European regulatory record by the legal entity identifier 724500MX2WBKDJP9HE56 (source: Authority for the Financial Markets, crypto register, downloaded September 2026). RampAtlas could not retrieve audited group accounts or a shareholder list from a primary source, so what can be checked here is regulatory rather than financial.
That record is unusually clear. Bitvavo holds a crypto-asset service provider authorisation under Article 63 of the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, granted by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets and carrying register number 41000010 (source: Authority for the Financial Markets, crypto register, downloaded September 2026). The authorisation covers three services: custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients, operation of a trading platform, and transfer services on behalf of clients. Bitvavo has passported it outward to 29 other European states, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Poland, and Ireland.
A full MiCAR licence is a meaningfully higher bar than the anti-money-laundering registration that preceded it. The Dutch transitional regime for firms registered with the central bank ended on June 30, 2025, and firms that did not obtain an authorisation could no longer serve Dutch customers (source: same register page). Bitvavo is on the licensed side of that line.
Products and markets
Bitvavo is a spot exchange and does not pretend otherwise. Its public market data endpoint returned 439 trading markets in September 2026, all of them live, with 428 quoted in euros and 11 in USDC (source: Bitvavo public API, markets endpoint). That is a wide list by European standards and it is euro-denominated almost end to end, which is the point.
There are no perpetual futures, no 100x leverage, and no copy trading. You buy an asset against euros, you hold it or you sell it. Staking and a small set of savings-style products sit alongside the exchange, but the centre of gravity is a euro order book with a low fee cap.
For a euro-area buyer that focus is a feature. The absence of derivatives removes an entire category of ways to lose money by accident, and the euro pairs remove the currency conversion that a dollar-denominated venue charges you on the way in and again on the way out. See Netherlands and Germany for how it compares locally.
Security record and custody
The MiCAR authorisation itself is the main custody fact. It names custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients as a licensed activity, which brings the firm's handling of client assets inside the scope of Dutch supervision rather than leaving it to company policy (source: Authority for the Financial Markets, crypto register).
RampAtlas could not retrieve Bitvavo's own security or proof-of-reserves pages in September 2026, because the company's site and help centre returned a bot challenge to our requests. We have therefore published no claim about cold storage percentages, insurance cover, or reserve ratios, and no such claim should be inferred from this page.
We found no hack, insolvency, or regulatory enforcement action against Bitvavo B.V. in any primary, court, or regulator source we checked. The firm appears on the AFM register as authorised rather than under any published restriction.
Deposits and withdrawals
The funding table is the reason to use Bitvavo and the reason to be careful with it. The per-transaction limits and the bank-verification rule matter as much as the fee (source: Bitvavo help center, "How can I deposit euro to Bitvavo?").
| Rail | Fee | Per-transaction limit | Verifies a bank account |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEPA bank transfer | 0% | €1,000,000 | Yes |
| iDEAL | 0% | Not stated | Yes |
| Bancontact | 0% | Not stated | Yes |
| EPS | 0% | Not stated | Yes |
| Credit card | 1.00% | €10,000 | No |
| Apple Pay | 1.00% | €10,000 | No |
| PayPal | 1.00% | €10,000 | No |
The trap is the withdrawal rule attached to those three methods. A card, Apple Pay, or PayPal deposit does not verify a bank account, and until you have deposited by a method that does, your euro withdrawals stay blocked. If you fund with a card because it is quick, you can find your money inside the platform with no route out until you make a SEPA deposit as well. Fund by bank transfer from the start and the problem never arises.
Support and usability
Bitvavo's interface is plain and fast, and the fee model does something genuinely user-friendly: it reserves the 0.25% ceiling on a resting order, then bills the real tier and refunds the difference. You are never charged more than the cap, and you find out the true rate at execution.
Support runs through a help centre and ticketing rather than a phone line. The nightly tier recalculation at around 01:00 UTC means a burst of trading today changes your rate tomorrow, not immediately, which is worth knowing if you are planning a large order across several days.

Bitvavo fits a euro-area buyer who wants free bank deposits, a 0.25% ceiling on trading fees, several hundred euro-quoted markets, and a counterparty holding a full MiCAR authorisation passported across the European Economic Area. For straightforward spot buying and holding in euros, that combination is hard to beat.
Look elsewhere if you want derivatives, margin, or non-euro base currencies, none of which Bitvavo offers, or if you intend to fund by card, since the 1.00% charge and the blocked-withdrawal rule make that the wrong route. Compare against other European venues at Compare and Buy Ethereum.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- SEPA, iDEAL, Bancontact, and EPS deposits are free
- Trading fee is capped at 0.25% and falls with 30-day volume
Cons
- Card, Apple Pay, and PayPal deposits each cost 1.00%
- Card and PayPal deposits do not verify a bank account, so withdrawals stay blocked
Guides
- How to Buy Crypto With a Bank Transfer (ACH, SEPA, Faster Payments, Wire)
Buying crypto with a bank transfer means moving currency from your bank into your exchange account over a domestic payment rail and then placing the order from the cash balance, which is normally the cheapest way to fund an account and differs from card funding mainly in speed and in the withdrawal holds that follow.
- Crypto Estate Planning: Making Sure Your Coins Aren't Lost With You
Passing on cryptocurrency requires two things that an ordinary will does not provide on its own, a record of what exists and where, and a route by which the person inheriting it can reach the keys, because no court order can recover a seed phrase nobody wrote down.
- Crypto Tax in Australia: CGT, Records, and the ATO
In Australia the Australian Taxation Office treats a crypto asset as a capital gains tax asset, so disposing of it by selling, swapping, or spending it is a CGT event, while tokens you receive from activities such as staking are treated as income when you receive them.
