Assets You Can Trade on Bitstamp by Robinhood

Fees explained

Bitstamp prices spot trades from a public rate card rather than a single flat number. The card is a maker taker fee schedule tiered by 30-day trading volume, with maker rates set below taker rates at every level, and separate tiers reaching up to $250 million of monthly volume (source: Bitstamp platform update on fee schedule changes). Your tier is applied automatically from your rolling volume, so no action is needed to move down the card as you trade more.

Deposit and withdrawal costs are quoted per currency and per rail on a separate schedule rather than folded into the trading rate, which means the number on the rate card is not the cost of a purchase funded from a bank account. Read both before comparing Bitstamp against another venue on headline rate. Because the rate card moves with tier revisions, check the figure against the live schedule rather than a rate quoted elsewhere.

Estimated cost of a $500 buy: taker fee plus published spread plus deposit fee, by the cheapest common payment method.

History and ownership

Bitstamp is no longer independent. Robinhood Markets, Inc. acquired all outstanding equity of Bitstamp on 2 June 2025 for approximately $224 million following customary purchase price adjustments, paid entirely in cash (source: Robinhood Markets Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025, filed 18 February 2026). Robinhood describes the acquisition as accelerating its expansion across the European Union, the United Kingdom and Asia, and now reports Bitstamp notional volume as a separate business metric.

That change matters more than most acquisitions do. Bitstamp's parent is a US-listed company that files audited accounts, names its regulators and discloses its legal proceedings quarterly. If you want to check something about the venue holding your money, the answer is in a filing rather than in a blog post, which is unusual for an exchange of this size. It also means Bitstamp's strategy is now set by a broker whose main business is not crypto.

Products and markets

Bitstamp runs a deliberately short list. As of September 2026, its public trading-pairs endpoint lists 256 enabled markets covering 120 base assets (source: Bitstamp public API). The quote currencies are the interesting part: US dollars, euros, pounds sterling, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, USDC, RLUSD and two euro stablecoin options.

Three fiat currencies quoted directly against 120 assets is a very different product from a 2,000-asset offshore venue. It suits someone buying major assets with euros or pounds and does not suit someone hunting a newly listed token. The order book is the only way to trade, so there is no separate instant-buy screen carrying a hidden spread, which is one fewer trap than at several competitors.

Security record and custody

Custody at Bitstamp is not the same as custody elsewhere in the Robinhood group. Robinhood states that it does not generally use third-party custodians for settled cryptocurrencies but that Bitstamp does (source: Robinhood Markets Form 10-K, filed 18 February 2026). Whether that is a strength depends on your view of the custodians involved, which Robinhood does not name in the filing.

The licensing picture is more concrete than at most venues. Robinhood discloses that Bitstamp entities, including Bitstamp UK Limited, are regulated in Lithuania, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Singapore and the United Kingdom, and are subject to oversight by regulators including the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Financial Conduct Authority, with a Markets in Crypto-Assets license issued by the Bank of Lithuania (source: Robinhood Markets Form 10-K, filed 18 February 2026). The Markets in Crypto-Assets regime took effect on 30 December 2024 and sets authorization and conduct requirements across the European Union.

RampAtlas found no enforcement action against Bitstamp that it could confirm from a primary regulator or court source, and so states none. That is a limit of what could be verified in this session rather than a finding.

Deposits and withdrawals

Funding costs sit on their own schedule, quoted per currency and per rail, and they are what decide the real price of a purchase at a venue whose trading rate is already modest (source: Bitstamp platform update on fee schedule changes). A euro bank transfer and a card payment are not close to each other in cost.

Because the fiat quote currencies are euros, pounds and dollars, most European buyers can fund in their own currency and trade directly, with no conversion step and no stablecoin bridge. That removes a cost layer that offshore venues cannot avoid. For the jurisdiction-level view, see Germany or United Kingdom, and for the asset view, Buy Bitcoin.

Support and usability

Bitstamp asks less of a new user than most exchanges do, because there is less on offer. One order book, a short asset list, three fiat currencies and a rate card. The main thing to learn is the difference between a maker taker fee pair of numbers and a single flat rate, and the practical consequence that a limit order costs less than a market order.

The awkwardness is administrative rather than technical. Trading costs and funding costs live on different pages, and the rate card is revised periodically, so a figure quoted anywhere other than the live schedule may be stale. kyc applies, and the product set now sits inside a larger group, so expect the brand and the app to keep changing under Robinhood's ownership.

Bitstamp fits a European buyer who wants to fund in euros or pounds, trade major assets on a real order book, and have a parent company that files audited accounts and names its regulators. The licensing disclosure is better documented than at almost any offshore venue. It is a poor fit if you want a long tail of small-cap tokens, since 120 assets is a deliberately short list, or if you need the cheapest possible headline rate, since small accounts sit at the top of a volume-tiered card. Anyone comparing on trading fee alone will misjudge it, because the funding leg is where the money goes. Start at Compare.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Maker rates sit below taker rates across the schedule
  • Deposit and withdrawal costs are listed separately by currency

Cons

  • The rate card is tiered by 30-day volume, so small accounts pay the top rate
  • Trading and funding costs have to be read off two different pages

Guides

  • Buying Crypto With PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay

Apple Pay and Google Pay are wrappers around a card you already hold, so on an exchange they are priced and treated exactly like a card deposit, while PayPal is a separate funding method with its own availability and its own fees, and all three settle instantly and then sit under a withdrawal hold.

  • Dollar-Cost Averaging Into Crypto: How It Works and How to Set It Up

Dollar-cost averaging means buying a fixed amount of an asset on a fixed schedule instead of all at once, and on a crypto exchange you run it either as a recurring buy the platform executes for you or as an order you place yourself each period, which is mostly a decision about fees.

  • Exchange Verification Tiers and Limits Explained

A verification tier is the level of identity evidence an exchange holds about you, and it controls what you are allowed to do: which deposit and withdrawal rails you can use, how much you can move in a given period, and in some cases which products and assets are available to your account at all.
