Assets You Can Trade on Wealthsimple Crypto

Fees explained
Wealthsimple Crypto charges one trading fee per order rather than a maker and taker rate, and as of September 2026 the baseline is 2.00% for a Core client with less than 1,000 Canadian dollars of 30-day volume (source: Wealthsimple crypto fee schedule, updated May 11, 2026). The schedule states plainly: "Wealthsimple charges a trading fee on each order based on the value of the crypto bought, sold or swapped by the order." Two percent is charged when you buy and again when you sell, so a round trip starts at roughly 4% before any price movement.
Two things move the rate. Your client tier sets a baseline of 2.0% for Core, 1.0% for Premium and 0.5% for Generation, and 30-day volume then discounts it further. The published volume ladder starts at "Less than $1,000 2.00%, $1,000 - $9,999.99 1.50%, $10,000 - $49,999.99 1.00%" and continues down to 0.05% at ten million dollars of 30-day volume.
| 30-day volume, Canadian dollars | Trading fee |
|---|---|
| Less than $1,000 | 2.00% |
| $1,000 to $9,999.99 | 1.50% |
| $10,000 to $49,999.99 | 1.00% |
| $10,000,000 and above | 0.05% |
There is a genuine exception. Buying or selling USDC with US dollars carries no trading fee at all, which makes the stablecoin the cheapest thing on the platform by a wide margin. staking is priced separately as a share of what you earn: 30% of staking rewards for Core and Premium clients, 15% for Generation.
A cost estimate for a $500 purchase on Wealthsimple Crypto and Kraken appears here once the published fee schedules are verified.
History and ownership
The crypto product is operated by Wealthsimple Investments Inc., which the company abbreviates to WSII in its own disclosures. The registration is the substantive fact about it: "WSII is registered under Canadian securities laws in the categories of investment dealer and investment fund manager in all provinces and territories and is a member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization. WSII is also registered as a money services business under regulations made under the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act (Canada)" (source: Wealthsimple Crypto Product Risk Disclosure).
That is a different regulatory shape from most venues in this directory. Wealthsimple Crypto sits inside a licensed investment dealer that also runs stock, retirement and cash accounts, rather than being a crypto company that later sought approvals. The disclosure describes the platform in the same terms: "Wealthsimple operates a platform that permits clients resident in Canada to open a Crypto account to buy, hold, stake, sell, deposit and withdraw crypto assets."
The money services business registration is with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada. No registration number is published on the pages RampAtlas could read, and the client agreement documents that would carry it were not opened, so the number is not recorded here.
Products and markets
Wealthsimple Crypto is a broker, not an exchange, and the distinction changes what you are buying. There is no order book you post to and no maker taker fee to work down. You submit an order, Wealthsimple routes it to liquidity providers, and you receive a price. Its own best execution disclosure describes the mechanism: "the exchange values provided by our LPs will generally include a spread", and adds that "WSII does not set or receive part of the spread applied by its LPs."
Read those two sentences together and the practical conclusion follows. There is a cost on top of the 2% that Wealthsimple does not set, does not keep, and does not publish a number for. RampAtlas therefore records no spread estimate for this venue, and the all-in cost of a purchase here cannot be calculated from published figures alone.
RampAtlas could not verify the supported asset list. The product page claims Bitcoin, Ether, Solana "and more than 170+ other cryptocurrencies", but the actual list lives in per-asset statements in a help centre that refused every request from our infrastructure in September 2026. A marketing count is not a list, so no asset availability is asserted on this page. Check the app for the specific asset you want before opening an account for it.
Security record and custody
RampAtlas found no enforcement action and no security incident against Wealthsimple Investments Inc. in the sources it could open. That is not the same as a clean record, and the search was narrower than we would like: the client agreements and the help centre were both unreadable, and no Canadian regulator archive returned a document we could quote.
What the regulatory shape does provide is a supervisory backstop that a plain crypto platform does not have. An investment dealer registered in every province and a member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization is subject to conduct rules and examinations covering the firm as a whole. That is a meaningful difference in oversight, and it is not a guarantee about the crypto assets themselves.
The custodial position is otherwise the standard one. Wealthsimple holds the private key and your balance is a claim on the firm. Assets you intend to hold for years belong in self custody, where the seed phrase is your responsibility and no operator's failure can reach them. Whether Wealthsimple Crypto supports withdrawing to an outside wallet for the asset you hold is a question to answer in the app before you buy, since the risk disclosure references crypto withdrawals but names no supported assets.
Deposits and withdrawals
Wealthsimple Crypto settles in two currencies. The fee schedule states that "you must have a CAD balance in your Crypto account to place an order in CAD" and that "for trades placed in USD, if you have a USD balance in your account, no currency conversion will be done at the time of the transaction and the USD price will be provided as-is."
That second clause is worth acting on. A US dollar balance avoids a conversion on every dollar-priced trade, and USDC bought with US dollars carries no trading fee, so the cheapest route on the platform runs entirely in dollars. Ordering in Canadian dollars against a dollar-priced asset means a conversion whose rate is not published in the fee schedule.
The schedule covers trading, staking, network and by-request fees and lists no fiat funding fee at all. RampAtlas does not read that silence as free: an absent figure is an absent figure, and no deposit or withdrawal rate is recorded for this venue. Confirm the funding cost in the app for the rail you plan to use.
On the way out, a crypto withdrawal pays the network fee for the asset and network you choose, which on a small balance can exceed everything else you have paid. The fee schedule names network fees as a category it covers, but the per-asset amounts were not readable.
Support and usability
The strongest thing about Wealthsimple Crypto for a first-time buyer is that it is one tab inside an app they may already use for saving and investing. There is no separate account to fund, no verification tier ladder to climb before trading, and no order book to learn. For someone who wants a small crypto position alongside ordinary investments and does not intend to trade it, that convenience is the product.
The cost of that convenience is stated on the fee page and is high. Two percent per order plus an unpublished liquidity-provider spread is several times what an order-book venue charges a Canadian funding by e-Transfer, and the gap compounds on every purchase and every sale. See Buy Bitcoin in Canada for what else serves the country.
Availability is the other constraint and it is absolute. The terms of use state: "In order to use and access the Platform, you must be a Canadian resident." Every other jurisdiction RampAtlas tracks is recorded as not available on that basis, and there is no non-resident route in. See Canada.
RampAtlas could not assess response times or support quality, because the help centre was unreachable.

Wealthsimple Crypto suits a Canadian resident who already banks with the firm, wants a small position bought in a few taps, and values sitting inside a registered investment dealer over paying the lowest price. The registration in every province, the membership of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization and a dated, readable fee schedule are all real advantages over venues that publish less.
It is an expensive way to buy. The 2.00% base rate applies twice over a round trip, a liquidity-provider spread rides on top of it with no published number, and the volume discounts only reach a rate an order-book venue offers by default at ten million dollars of monthly turnover. Anyone buying regularly, or buying anything larger than a token position, should compare the cost against a Canadian-serving exchange at Compare before committing. Non-residents cannot use it at all.
