Fees explained

bitFlyer's order book costs 0.10% to 0.15% depending on which entity you trade with, and its US instant Buy/Sell screen carries a published fee of between 0.1% and 6.0%. As of September 2026 the Japanese entity charges 0.15% at the base tier on Lightning Spot, while bitFlyer USA and bitFlyer EUROPE both start at 0.10% on Bitcoin and Ethereum (source: bitFlyer commission pages). The screen matters more than the entity.

The Japanese schedule steps down in small increments through the 1 million yen band, from 0.15% to 0.12%, and the published range across assets and tiers runs from 0.01% to 0.15% (source: bitFlyer Japan commission page).

Because the instant cost is a band rather than a figure, RampAtlas records no spread estimate for bitFlyer and prices the venue on its order-book rate alone.

History and ownership

bitFlyer was founded in Japan in 2014 and operates as three separately authorised companies rather than one global platform. Which one you deal with is decided by where you live, and it changes your fees, your rails and your regulator.

bitFlyer, Inc. is registered in Japan as a crypto asset exchange service provider with the Kanto Local Finance Bureau under number 00003, is a Financial Instruments Business Operator under number 3294, and belongs to the Japan Virtual and Crypto assets Exchange Association (source: bitFlyer Japan commission page). Number 00003 makes it one of the first three firms on the Japanese register.

bitFlyer USA, Inc. is registered as a Money Services Business with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network under number 31000245897927 and carries NMLS ID 1528491 for its state money transmitter licences (source: bitFlyer states page).

bitFlyer EUROPE S.A. "is authorised in Luxembourg by the Ministry of Finance as a Payment Institution (license number Z00000016) and is registered as a Virtual Asset Service Provider (registration number 00000001) subject to the prudential and AML/CTF supervision of the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier" (source: bitFlyer Europe terms of use). That reference records the first vasp on the Luxembourg register.

RampAtlas could not reach the Japanese, Luxembourg, New York or FinCEN registers, so every number here is recorded from bitFlyer's own pages.

Products and markets

Japanese yen runs on bitFlyer, Inc., US dollars on bitFlyer USA and euros on bitFlyer EUROPE (source: bitFlyer commission pages). Each runs the bitFlyer Lightning order book alongside an instant desk, called Easy Exchange in Japan and Buy/Sell Virtual Currencies in the United States.

US coverage is the widest of the three. bitFlyer USA lists licences in 49 states and the District of Columbia and holds New York Virtual Currency Business Activity licence 122474 from the state's Department of Financial Services (source: bitFlyer states page). A New York money transmitter license is among the harder US authorisations to obtain.

Two caveats sit inside that coverage. Nevada is the only state absent from the licence table, and RampAtlas records it as unavailable on that absence rather than on any bitFlyer statement. Alaska is explicit: the page states that "this license does not cover the transmission of virtual currency" for Alaska residents, so that state is recorded as limited. Five more states show a pending licence and four show no licence named, which RampAtlas has not resolved.

European coverage rests on weaker evidence. bitFlyer EUROPE's terms define the European Economic Area and require residence in a non-sanctioned location, but publish no eligible-country list, so the German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Irish availability recorded here follows from the Luxembourg passport rather than a published list.

Security record and custody

No entity publishes a proof of reserves attestation. bitFlyer EUROPE's home page states that the company "is audited by a Big 4 firm" without naming the firm, the date or the scope, which is too thin to record as a custody fact.

What the group does have is supervision in three jurisdictions at once, which is unusual and meaningful in a way a security page is not. The Japanese registration carries obligations on segregation of customer assets and cold storage; the Luxembourg licence brings CSSF prudential supervision on top of anti-money-laundering registration; the New York licence brings the state's Department of Financial Services. Three regulators examining one group is a stronger structural check than a single-jurisdiction venue can offer.

RampAtlas has not verified an incident history for any bitFlyer entity against a primary or regulator source, and makes no claim in either direction. kyc is required across the group: bitFlyer EUROPE tells new users to "unlock full functionality by verifying your identity".

Deposits and withdrawals

Deposit rails are regional and no entity offers a card (source: bitFlyer commission pages).

The euro rails are the cheapest of the three: a free SEPA deposit and a 30-cent withdrawal is close to free banking. The US Fedwire deposit is free, but the $20 wire transfer out is a flat charge that hurts small withdrawals, so batch them. In Japan the free route is specifically the DOCOMO SMTB Net Bank quick deposit; every other quick deposit and convenience store payment is a flat 330 yen. bitFlyer EUROPE also supports PayPal and bitFlyer USA adds ACH.

The absence of a card rail is worth reading as a feature, since card deposits are the most expensive way to fund a purchase on most platforms.

Support and usability

The three-entity structure is the defining usability fact. You are not choosing bitFlyer; you are choosing bitFlyer, Inc., bitFlyer USA, Inc. or bitFlyer EUROPE S.A., and the fees, rails and regulator change with it. Read the commission page for your own region.

One contradiction on bitFlyer's own pages deserves a flag. The European terms define the European Economic Area as including the United Kingdom, while the same site states that "the services mentioned on this website are not available to UK consumers". RampAtlas takes the explicit exclusion as authoritative. Switzerland is absent from the EEA definition and is recorded as unavailable on that absence alone. Verdict

bitFlyer suits someone in Japan, the United States or the euro area who places their own orders on Lightning and wants a counterparty licensed by their own regulator rather than an offshore holding company. A 0.10% base rate, free wire and SEPA deposits and a New York licence make a strong combination.

Everything turns on avoiding the instant screen, which in the United States carries a published fee of up to 6.0%, sixty times the order-book rate and disclosed as a range rather than a price. Look elsewhere if you are a UK consumer, where the service is not offered; if you live in Nevada, absent from the US licence table; or if you want a published reserves attestation, which no entity provides.
