Crypto in France
19 exchanges we have verified serve residents of France, and 112 of the 150 assets we track are available on at least two of them. Only crypto-asset service providers authorised under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation may serve French residents, because the transition for previously registered digital asset service providers ended on 1 July 2026. Legal Status and Regulation
Buying cryptocurrency is legal in France, and the exchange serving you must hold a crypto-asset service provider authorisation under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. The Autorite des marches financiers grants it and began accepting applications in 2024. Before that, French platforms operated as digital asset service providers registered with the same regulator, and those registrations did not carry a European passport. The transition ran until 1 July 2026. In a notice published on 5 February 2026 the Autorite des marches financiers reminded providers that after that date only authorised firms or firms notifying under Article 60 of the regulation could operate, that wind-down plans were due by 30 March 2026, and that operating without authorisation carries up to two years imprisonment and a 30,000 euro fine under the Code monetaire et financier. As of September 2026 the transition has ended. Retail buyers also get a 14 day right of withdrawal when acquiring crypto directly from an offeror.
Buying Crypto in France
France finished its move to the European crypto regime on 1 July 2026, and the practical consequence for buyers is a shorter, cleaner list of platforms. The exchange you use must hold a European crypto-asset service provider authorisation, euros arrive over SEPA at no cost, and the tax treatment is a single flat rate with an unusually low reporting threshold that catches small sellers.
How buying works here
Check the authorisation before you check the fees. The Autorité des marchés financiers reminded providers in a notice published on 5 February 2026 that after the transition only authorised firms, or firms notifying under Article 60 of the European regulation, could operate, that wind-down plans were due by 30 March 2026, and that operating without authorisation carries up to two years imprisonment and a 30,000 euro fine under the Code monétaire et financier. A platform still soliciting French residents without that status is not a grey area.
Because the authorisation passports across the European Union, the entity that opens your account is often not French. Kraken reaches French residents from Payward Ireland Limited and OKX from OKX Europe Limited in Malta, while Bybit EU operates through Bybit EU GmbH under supervision by the Austrian financial market authority (source: exchange terms of service and Bybit EU site, September 2026). Each runs kyc before funding, typically an identity document plus a liveness check. After that, buying is ordinary cex mechanics: fund in euros, then place a market order or a limit order. For one asset end to end, see Buy Bitcoin in France.
If you buy directly from an offeror rather than on a trading venue, you keep a 14 day right of withdrawal at no cost.
Payment rails and banks
Euro funding is free and fast on the main venues.
| Rail | Typical use | Fee/time as stated | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEPA and SEPA Instant via Plaid | Euro bank transfer | No fee, zero to three business days, instant on the SEPA Instant route | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| SEPA and SEPA Instant via Banking Circle | Euro bank transfer | No fee, zero to three business days, instant on the SEPA Instant route | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| SEPA via Openpayd | Euro bank transfer | No fee, zero to three business days | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| SEPA via Bank Frick | Euro bank transfer | No fee, zero to three business days | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| SWIFT via Bank Frick | International wire | 3 euros, one to five business days | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| PayPal | Wallet funding | Variable processing fees | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
Use SEPA Instant where the platform offers it, since it settles in seconds for the same price as the standard transfer. Card funding is available almost everywhere and costs several percent before you have bought anything, which on a modest purchase dwarfs the trading fee and the spread combined. Transfers must come from an account in your own name, or they will be returned.

Taxes in practice
Occasional disposals of digital assets by individuals fall under article 150 VH bis of the Code général des impôts, and the gain is charged at the flat tax of 30 percent, made up of 12.8 percent income tax and 17.2 percent social contributions (source: BOFiP, BOI-RPPM-PVBMC-30-30).
Two details change the arithmetic. Disposals are exempt entirely if your total disposal proceeds for the year stay at or below 305 euros, and exceeding that threshold makes every disposal in the year taxable, so a single sale can pull the rest of your year into charge. Since 1 January 2023 you can instead elect, irrevocably and on your annual return, to have the gains taxed under the progressive income tax scale, which suits low-income years and nobody else. Habitual and professional traders fall outside this regime altogether. Keep your cost basis and disposal proceeds separately, because the threshold tests proceeds rather than profit.

Common problems
The disruption most French holders have met recently is a forced migration.
Transfers off-platform are the other friction. European transfer of funds rules require originator and beneficiary information on crypto transfers with no minimum amount, so small withdrawals can pause while the exchange collects destination details (source: Regulation (EU) 2023/1113). Withdrawals to an address on another exchange are the ones most often held, so plan for the delay rather than treating it as a fault.

Guides
- How to Buy Crypto With a Bank Transfer (ACH, SEPA, Faster Payments, Wire)
Buying crypto with a bank transfer means moving currency from your bank into your exchange account over a domestic payment rail and then placing the order from the cash balance, which is normally the cheapest way to fund an account and differs from card funding mainly in speed and in the withdrawal holds that follow.
- Crypto Estate Planning: Making Sure Your Coins Aren't Lost With You
Passing on cryptocurrency requires two things that an ordinary will does not provide on its own, a record of what exists and where, and a route by which the person inheriting it can reach the keys, because no court order can recover a seed phrase nobody wrote down.
- Self-Custody vs Exchange Custody: How to Decide
Deciding between self-custody and exchange custody means choosing which failure you would rather be exposed to, a company that loses or freezes your assets or a mistake of your own that nobody can undo, and most people resolve it by splitting holdings rather than picking one for everything.
