Buying Crypto in Italy
Italy has the tightest authorised list of any large European market. When the transition to the European regime closed on 30 June 2026, the two regulators confirmed that just nine entities were cleared to operate in the country. Buying crypto is legal and euros fund over SEPA at no cost, but the set of platforms that may lawfully take an Italian customer is much smaller than the global market suggests.
How buying works here
Italy implemented the European regulation through legislative decree 129 of 5 September 2024 and split supervision between the Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa and the Banca d'Italia. In a joint statement on 30 June 2026 the two confirmed the transition had ended with nine entities cleared, eight authorised as crypto-asset service providers and one bank that notified instead (source: CONSOB statement on the end of the MiCA transitional period in Italy).
Because those authorisations passport across the European Union, your account often sits with an entity established elsewhere. Kraken reaches Italian residents by passporting from Payward Ireland Limited, OKX from OKX Europe Limited in Malta, and Bybit EU through Bybit EU GmbH under supervision by the Austrian financial market authority (source: exchange terms of service and Bybit EU site, September 2026). Each runs kyc before your first deposit, normally an identity document plus a liveness or video check. Buying then follows the usual cex pattern: fund in euros, then place a market order or a limit order. For one asset end to end, see Buy Bitcoin in Italy.
The practical rule is to verify status before fees. A platform that is not authorised in some member state cannot lawfully solicit you, whatever its Italian-language landing page says.
Payment rails and banks
Euro funding is the same cheap machinery as the rest of the single currency area.
| Rail | Typical use | Fee/time as stated | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEPA and SEPA Instant via Plaid | Euro bank transfer | No fee, zero to three business days, instant on the SEPA Instant route | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| SEPA and SEPA Instant via Banking Circle | Euro bank transfer | No fee, zero to three business days, instant on the SEPA Instant route | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| SEPA via Openpayd | Euro bank transfer | No fee, zero to three business days | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| SEPA via Bank Frick | Euro bank transfer | No fee, zero to three business days | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| SWIFT via Bank Frick | International wire | 3 euros, one to five business days | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
| PayPal | Wallet funding | Variable processing fees | Kraken cash deposit methods and funding options, fetched September 2026 |
Use SEPA Instant where it is offered. It arrives in seconds and costs the same as the slower transfer. Card funding is available on most platforms and is the expensive route, since the percentage charge applies before any trading fee and before you cross the spread. Transfers must come from a bank account in your own name or they will normally be returned rather than credited.

Taxes in practice
RampAtlas has not yet verified Italy's crypto tax treatment against a primary source, so this page states no rates, thresholds or filing dates for the country. We would rather leave the section thin than publish a figure we cannot cite, and we will fill it in once the Agenzia delle Entrate guidance has been checked directly.
What is safe to say is structural and applies wherever you live. The taxable moment is the disposal, not the purchase, so selling for euros, swapping one token for another, and spending crypto all need recording, and a swap you never cashed out still counts. Keep the acquisition date, the amount, and the euro value at acquisition for every buy, because that cost basis record is what any regime will ask for. Rewards from staking are usually treated separately from the coins that produced them.
Common problems
Scarcity is the Italian problem.
The transition also displaced customers. Providers without authorisation had to stop normal activity and move or close customer accounts, so an account opened under the older OAM register may now be held by a different operator or may have been wound down. Confirm the entity before depositing again. Withdrawals to an outside wallet can also pause while the platform collects originator and beneficiary details, since European transfer of funds rules apply with no minimum amount (source: Regulation (EU) 2023/1113).

Guides
- Crypto Estate Planning: Making Sure Your Coins Aren't Lost With You
Passing on cryptocurrency requires two things that an ordinary will does not provide on its own, a record of what exists and where, and a route by which the person inheriting it can reach the keys, because no court order can recover a seed phrase nobody wrote down.
- Self-Custody vs Exchange Custody: How to Decide
Deciding between self-custody and exchange custody means choosing which failure you would rather be exposed to, a company that loses or freezes your assets or a mistake of your own that nobody can undo, and most people resolve it by splitting holdings rather than picking one for everything.
- Spot Bitcoin ETFs vs Buying Bitcoin Directly
A spot bitcoin ETF is a share in a fund that holds bitcoin, bought in a brokerage account and settled like any other listed security, while buying bitcoin directly gives you the asset itself on an exchange and the option to move it into a wallet you control, and the difference is custody rather than exposure.
