Buying Crypto in Nigeria

How buying works here

Buying crypto in Nigeria is legal and the Securities and Exchange Commission is the regulator. The Investments and Securities Act 2025, signed on 25 March 2025 and gazetted on 2 May 2025, wrote virtual and digital assets into the statutory definition of securities and gave the commission express power to register and regulate digital asset exchanges, virtual asset service providers and digital asset operators (source: Securities and Exchange Commission, Investments and Securities Act 2025).

That act settled a question that had been open for years, and it repealed the 2007 Act. The detailed operating rules still come from the commission's 2022 Rules on Issuance, Offering Platforms and Custody of Digital Assets, which require a digital asset offering platform to hold 500 million naira in paid-up capital and require risk acknowledgement before a customer can trade (source: Securities and Exchange Commission, rules on issuance, offering and custody of digital assets).

Retail participation is capped by rule. An ordinary retail investor is limited to 200,000 naira per issuer and 2 million naira across any twelve months on a regulated offering platform (source: Securities and Exchange Commission, 2022 rules). Those caps apply to digital asset offerings rather than to every secondary market trade, and they are the reason the onboarding flow asks about your investor category before it asks for money.

Payment rails and banks

Naira funding at a platform serving Nigeria happens by local currency deposit and bank withdrawal.

That is the shape of a working naira on ramp off ramp: money in from your bank, tokens out, naira back to the same bank.

We could not retrieve current documentation from the Central Bank of Nigeria or from a Nigerian platform during this review, so we are not stating which specific transfer networks, banks, settlement times, limits or fees apply today, and we are not characterising the current state of banking access for crypto businesses. Both have changed more than once in recent years and both deserve a primary source rather than a recollection. That verification is in the queue.

Naira-denominated stablecoin tokens have been issued in the Nigerian market, but we could not confirm current issuer or regulatory status from a primary source, so we make no claim about them here.

Exchanges people use

One platform in our set has confirmed Nigerian availability, one is closed to the country, and two domestic exchanges have regulator approval on the record.

The commission's register of registered fintech operators is the authoritative check on whether a platform may lawfully serve you, and it is worth consulting before you fund an account rather than after. Taxes in practice

We have not confirmed Nigeria's current tax treatment of crypto gains against a primary source from the tax authority, so this section is being verified and we make no claim here.

Common problems

The capital and conduct requirements in the 2022 rules are strict enough that the number of approved domestic platforms is small, which is the practical constraint most Nigerian buyers run into.

That gap is why p2p trading has a large presence in the Nigerian market. Peer-to-peer trades move risk from the platform to the counterparty: you are relying on an escrow arrangement and on the other person completing a bank transfer, and the disputes that follow are slower and harder to resolve than an exchange order. We have not confirmed current peer-to-peer volumes or dispute rates from a primary source, so we describe the mechanism rather than quantifying it.

Verification friction is the third recurring issue. The 2022 rules require risk acknowledgement before a customer can trade, and the retail caps of 200,000 naira per issuer and 2 million naira over twelve months mean platforms must categorise you before granting access. Expect kyc to ask more than identity questions.

Regulatory change is the background condition. The Investments and Securities Act 2025 is new, the detailed rules under it are still the 2022 set, and the commission's register is where the current position is recorded. Anything you read about Nigerian crypto regulation written before May 2025 should be checked against the act rather than relied on.

Guides

  • Crypto Estate Planning: Making Sure Your Coins Aren't Lost With You

Passing on cryptocurrency requires two things that an ordinary will does not provide on its own, a record of what exists and where, and a route by which the person inheriting it can reach the keys, because no court order can recover a seed phrase nobody wrote down.

  • Self-Custody vs Exchange Custody: How to Decide

Deciding between self-custody and exchange custody means choosing which failure you would rather be exposed to, a company that loses or freezes your assets or a mistake of your own that nobody can undo, and most people resolve it by splitting holdings rather than picking one for everything.

  • Spot Bitcoin ETFs vs Buying Bitcoin Directly

A spot bitcoin ETF is a share in a fund that holds bitcoin, bought in a brokerage account and settled like any other listed security, while buying bitcoin directly gives you the asset itself on an exchange and the option to move it into a wallet you control, and the difference is custody rather than exposure.
