A scheduled period when an exchange suspends some or all services to upgrade systems.

You meet the term on an exchange status page, in a support notice, or in the email that lands the day before your transfer was due to go out. Exchanges use windows to migrate databases, patch matching engines, and follow chain upgrades that require a wallet to stop and restart on new software. The word "scheduled" is the important half: an unplanned outage is an incident, and the two are handled differently in the terms of service.

The common mistake is treating a window as all-or-nothing. Deposits, withdrawals, spot trading, and derivatives are separate services, and a venue can pause any one of them independently. A chain upgrade usually forces a pause for one asset while the rest of the exchange runs normally.

How it works

  1. The exchange publishes a notice with a start time, an expected duration, and a list of exactly which services stop. Status pages carry this and are the source that stays current, since notices posted in an app are easy to miss.
  2. For a chain-driven pause, the venue stops crediting deposits and stops signing withdrawals for that asset before the fork or upgrade height, then waits for the network to settle before reopening.
  3. For an engine or database upgrade, trading stops and the order book is frozen or cleared. Whether resting orders survive is a policy choice, not a technical certainty.
  4. Balances are unaffected throughout. What is suspended is your ability to act on them.

Example

Take an illustrative case. An exchange announces a six hour window for one asset covering a network upgrade, deposits and withdrawals only, spot trading unaffected. You send coins from a self-custody wallet an hour after the window opens. The transaction confirms on chain within minutes and the block explorer shows it arriving, but your exchange balance does not change until the wallet service restarts and replays the missed blocks. Nothing is lost. The delay is the entire cost, and it is a real cost if you meant to sell into a move.

Why it matters when you buy

Check the venue's status page before any transfer large enough that a multi-hour delay would bother you, and before a first deposit to a new exchange. If you are comparing venues, published maintenance history is a fair proxy for operational quality alongside the fee and liquidity numbers on the fee comparison and the profiles at the exchange directory. Timing matters most for anyone moving between venues to catch a specific price.

Questions

Will my open orders survive a maintenance window?

Sometimes. Some venues hold the book and resume it, others cancel everything before the restart. The notice for that specific window says which, and it is worth reading rather than assuming, because a cancelled limit order leaves you with no position at all.

Can I still deposit during a maintenance window?

You can broadcast the transaction and it will confirm on chain normally, but the exchange will not credit it until the service restarts. The funds are not at risk, they are simply not spendable inside the exchange yet.

How do I find out about one in advance?

Subscribe to the exchange's status page rather than relying on email or in-app banners. Status pages are updated first and carry the scope and duration in one place.
